Bringing the university to Fort Riley is what they do.
The Kansas State Research and Extension at Fort Riley continuously offers classes in Family resource management, as well as nutrition and health as part of its mission to “help strengthen Families, support military adjustment and transitions and encourage positive, healthy and constructive skills for all.”
Its non-formal, non-credit programs put the “extension” in K-State Research and Extension, bringing resources that meet the needs of the Fort Riley population with university resources.
The classes are for anyone, and programming is free. Not only that, but the agents are mobile. They can accommodate an individual or a group, anywhere and anytime.
While the invitation to request a program is always open, the following classes already exist on the schedule:
Small Steps to Health and Wealth
Three sessions – From 10 a.m. to noon, Feb. 21 and 28; and March 6 at Army Community Services, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends Feb. 20.
This three-part series of classes will provide information to help participants take charge of their future. Strategies for behavioral change will be given that allow participants to take action in meeting health and wealth goals.
Compost on Post
From 1 to 3 p.m. March 5 at the Resiliency Learning Center, Building 7285, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends Feb. 29.
Learn how to compost food and yard wastes to recycle nutrients, build soil to grow healthier plants and keep organic matter out of the landfill.
Worst Cooks of Fort Riley – Cooking 101
Six non-competitive series of cooking classes – from 1 to 3 p.m. March 13, 20 and 27; and April 3, 17 and 24 at ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends March 1. Cost of the class is $50.
Unlike Food Network’s “Worst Cooks in America,” this non-competitive series of cooking classes will help Fort Riley’s worst cooks lose that reputation.
Participants will learn basic cooking skills as you prepare and sample a variety of dishes. Learn money saving and healthful eating tips so eating out becomes a treat, not a necessity. Payment confirms a seat in the class. Cost of $50 includes cookbook, chef’s knife, cutting board and teaching materials.
Organize Your Important Household Papers
From 3 to 4:30 p.m. March 13 at ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill.
Have a hard time finding necessary paperwork at tax time or other occasions when needed? This class is for individuals wanting to improve their system of sorting and finding important household documents.
Family Fun in the Kitchen
Five sessions – from 1 to 3 p.m. March 15, 22 and 29; and April 5 and 19 at ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill.
The class is currently full, but those wanting to take the class are asked to continue to register for any cancellations and for future classes.
Parent and child will learn to prepare simple nutritious snacks and meals, safe ways to cook as a Family and how to make a food budget go further and funner.
Walk Kansas
March 18 through May 12. The registration period runs from March 1 to 15. A kickoff ceremony will be from noon to 1 p.m. March 15 at the Resiliency Learning Center, Building 7285, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill.
Walk Kansas is a team-based, eight-week healthy lifestyle challenge that will help participants lead a healthier life by being more active, making better nutrition choices and learning positive ways to deal with stress. Teams consist of six people.
Details of how to report weekly will be briefed during registration.
Container Gardening
From 10 to 11:30 a.m. March 26 at the Resiliency Learning Center, Building 7285, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends March 21.
No time or space for a traditional garden? Try container gardening. Come learn the ins and outs of growing vegetables, herbs and flowers in pots. It’s a great way to introduce children to growing plants.
Starting Investing with $1 to $1000
Three sessions – From 2 to 4 p.m. April 12, 19 and 26 at ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends April 11.
This class will teach participants how to plan for their future goals and save money to invest, as well as the basis principles of investing.
Raising Money Smart Kids
From 1 to 3 p.m. April 30 at ACS Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends April 27.
Ever considered teaching the little ones about money but don’t know where to start? This class can help!
Basic Budgeting
From 1 to 3 p.m. May 9 at ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends May 8.
Basic budgeting skills are important to manage limited financial resources. Program participants will learn how to track expenses and create a spending plan to intentionally direct their money in areas important to them.
Quintessential Quick Breads
Same class, day or evening. From noon to 3 p.m. May 2 in Room 30, ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends April 26; and from 6 to 8:30 p.m. May 23 in Room 29, ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends May 17.
Learn to make more healthful versions of a variety of quick breads including muffins, biscuits, nut breads, pancakes and more. Baking from scratch is fun, saves money and can be more nutritious than baking from a box.
Basic Yeast Breads
Same class, day or evening. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 10 in Room 30, ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends May 3; and from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 16 in Room 29, ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends May 11.
Learn to make yeast breads from scratch. This hands-on basic bread making class will cover the whys, how’s and what to do’s for making all sorts of yeast breads. Learn the basics and be able to bake any kind of bread.
Meat-Free Monday Vegetarian Cooking Class
From 1 to 3 p.m. May 14 May at ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends May 10.
What is a meal without meat? Learn to make tasty main dishes with all the interesting grains and beans found in the grocery stores.
Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate? Who Gets Grandpa’s Fishing Pole?
From 2 to 4 p.m. May 22 at ACS, Building 7264, Normandy Drive on Custer Hill. Registration ends May 21.
Learn ways to have conversations and make decisions about sentimental objects. Take steps to avoid conflict when a loved one passes away.
